This was after the arctic cold snap hit New York City and partially froze the Hudson River on January 21st &amp; 22nd with overnight low temperatures around 12 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>It was dark, but in the water below I could see these glistening round ice circles. They were mesmerizing. It was cold, but I couldn\u2019t stop looking at them.<\/p>\n<p>The Hudson River is situated between New Jersey and New York City. It&#8217;s a little over a half mile wide and on the other side here is Hoboken, New Jersey. The last time I recall the Hudson River partially freezing was in 2014, which coincidentally I wrote about in <a href=\"https:\/\/new2.kinsleytocairo.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/25\/10-years-ago-this-winter-the-2014-north-american-blizzard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">February 2024<\/a> (the ten year mark). But I don\u2019t remember seeing these nifty little ice circles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ice_circle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ice circles<\/a>, also known as\u00a0<strong>ice disks<\/strong>\u00a0or <strong>ice pans<\/strong> are a \u201crare natural phenomenon that occur in slow moving water. They are thin circular slabs of ice that rotate slowly on a body of water\u2019s surface\u201d and form these neat, almost perfect circles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/new2.kinsleytocairo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20250125_181214-TO.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/new2.kinsleytocairo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20250125_181126-TO.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/new2.kinsleytocairo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20250125_181107-TO.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>And the physics explanation: \u201cIce circles tend to rotate even when they form in water that is not moving. The ice circle lowers the temperature of the water around it, which causes the water to become denser than the slightly warmer water around it.
